About the webinar

Cancer remains a leading cause of the global disease burden, and cancer cases and deaths are forecasted to rise through at least 2050, with disproportionate growth in low- and middle-income countries. Effectively tackling this global challenge will require sustained, collaborative international and national action.

Understanding the burden of cancer is essential to the development of effective strategies, but directly observed data are not available in every country. The Global Burden of Disease study (GBD) estimates cancer burden for 204 countries and territories and these results can be leveraged as part of broader policy and resource planning efforts to collectively improve cancer outcomes.

The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) webinar will include:

  • An overview of GBD 2023 global cancer burden estimates from 1990 to 2023, with forecasts through 2050, and the types of results available through online visualization tools.
  • A panel discussion highlighting how GBD estimates have been used to address cancer burden at national and global levels.
  • A discussion of approaches to applying GBD estimates toward program goals, and potential future opportunities for leveraging GBD results to address cancer burden.
